Niniejszy artykuł metodologiczny jest oparty na badaniach przeprowadzonych między styczniem 2005 a kwietniem 2008 r., których obiektem była analiza, z jednej strony znaczenia, a z drugiej - przykładów przeciwdziałania przemocy dokonywanej przez część "trudnej młodzieży" w przestrzeni miejskiej trzech społeczeństw: francuskiego, rosyjskiego i polskiego. This paper provides the methodological basis of international research (carried out under the framework of a doctoral thesis) on acts of violence amongst contemporary "problem youth" in urban areas. It focuses on three societies: French, Russian and Polish. The paper consists of two parts, providing: 1) basic assumptions, the subject and issues of research; and 2) research methods and instruments. The doctoral thesis alluded to is of an interdisciplinary nature. The author has taken advantage of methods employed by such areas of social science as: 1) sociology - to analyze acts of violence among the young population; 2) sociology of politics - to analyze the reaction towards violence, forms of countering violence by local institutional actors; 3) anthropology of cities - the use of long-term participatory observation, which lies at the heart of this research. Added to the paper is an appendix with the basic data on all the research participants, interviews conducted between January 2005 and April 2008 in France, Russia and Poland. (original abstract)
