Venture capital market in Israel is one of the most developed in the world, as confirmed by sta- tistics from recent years. In the bibliography of the subject, emphasis is placed on the connection between capital markets and the economy. The article presents an attempt to examine, socio-economic conditions in Poland, especially within the areas of capital markets and the economy, on the basis of selected EU mem- ber states. A synthetic measure of development was created to solve this problem. This measure helps to explain multivariativemultivariate issues like the level and development of economies in the stud- ied objects (here Poland and EU member states) and objectify it by using statistics. Therefore, it is referred to as a synthetic measure. In the construction of this kind of measure it is the qualification of diagnostic variables that is very important. Particularly, this should be variables which express the level and development of mulivariativemultivariate issues. In this research the socio-economic variables used are inflation, unemployment, HDI (Human Development Index), GDI (Gender-Related Develop- ment Index), GEM (Gender Empowerment Measure) and indices for national stock markets. The classification of countries was constructed on the basis of a synthetic measure. Data from the years 20002005 were used for this purpose.(original abstract)
