This article presents the evolution in the activities of stock exchanges. As a result of new technological developments, the liberalization of regulations on investment in financial markets and growing demand for investment in securities, stock exchanges have changed their rules. With national monopolies of a membership structure they transform into enterprises providing services of emissions and trading in securities and the dissemination of information on trading. The phenomenon of competition and the consolidation of stock exchanges accompany this transformation.(original abstract)
