Abstrakty

W artykule autor przedstawia historię sukcesu Kryształowego Pałacu wybudowanego w Londynie z okazji Wielkiej Wystawy Światowej w 1851 r., który był zarazem symbolem potęgi Brytyjskiego Imperium oraz innowacyjności ogrodnika Josepha Paxtona (1803-1865). Powstanie tak niezwykłej budowli było możliwe dzięki owocom rewolucji przemysłowej napędzającej brytyjską gospodarkę i eksperymentom Paxtona z możliwościami zastosowania szkła oraz stali. Kryształowy Pałac, początkowo będący źródłem licznym sporów a także niepokojów, stał się główną atrakcją Wielkiej Wystawy, a Paxton zapisał się na kartach historii jako jeden z największych architektów epoki wiktoriańskiej. The article deals with the history of the success of the Crystal Palace that was built in London as the venue of the Great Exhibition of 1851. It symbolized the might of the British Empire as well as the ingenuity of its author, a gardener, Joseph Paxton (1803-1865). The erection of such an impressive building was possible thanks to the outcomes of the Industrial Revolution and Paxton's experiments with the use of glass and steel. Being initially a source of disputes and anxiety, the Crystal Palace became a major attraction of the Great Exhibition. In addition, it allowed Paxton to go down in history as one of the best architects of the Victorian period. (original abstract)
