This paper contributes to the discussion about the influence of the last economic crisis on the international trade in goods. Our fundamental aim is to investigate determinants of bilateral trade in intermediate and final goods before the last economic crisis (1995-2008) and during the crisis (2009-2010). We construct gravity models for all countries of the world. For an empirical test we use a loglinear specification of the gravity models and panel data estimation with the Hausman-Taylor method. We test standard factors of gravity models such as the size of the markets measured by the GDP of the trade partners, geographic distance between the trading countries as well as their economic distance measured by differences in GDP per capita. We put into our gravity model dummy variables illustrating the common official language of trade partners and their membership in regional trading arrangements and monetary unions. Our models include as well two dummy variables representing both years crucial for our study (2009 - the great trade collapse - and 2010 - economic rebound). Moreover, we analyze interactions between these two dummies and other independent variables. Besides expected parameters by standard variables, we expect a negative impact of the crisis on trade as well as a higher elasticity of trade towards GDP during the crisis. Before the gravity model analysis we present general statistics concerning international trade in intermediate and final goods. (original abstract)

Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji nad wpływem światowego kryzysu na handel międzynarodowy. Głównym celem autorów jest ustalenie determinantów bilateralnych przepływów handlowych w zakresie dóbr pośrednich i finalnych w okresie przedkryzysowym (1995-2008) oraz w czasie trwania kryzysu (2009-2010). W tym celu skonstruowano model grawitacji, do którego testów empirycznych metodą Hausmana-Taylora wykorzystano ogólnoświatowe dane panelowe. W modelu wzięto pod uwagę odległość geograficzną między partnerami handlowymi, jak również odległość ekonomiczną mierzoną różnicami w PKB per capita. Za pomocą zmiennych zero-jedynkowych zilustrowano fakt posiadania przez partnerów handlowych wspólnego języka oficjalnego, uczestnictwa w ugrupowaniu integracyjnym oraz unii monetarnej. Model zawierał ponadto dwie dodatkowe zmienne zero-jedynkowe, w celu uchwycenia dwóch lat istotnych dla przeprowadzonego studium (2009, w którym doszło do załamania się wolumenu światowego handlu, oraz 2010, w którym odnotowano ponowny wzrost obrotów). Analizie poddano interakcje między tymi zmiennymi a pozostałymi zmiennymi niezależnymi. (abstrakt oryginalny)
