The paper is to present the role of sustainable development idea in Swedish development policy. The concept of sustainable development began to permeate development policy in the 80s since the time of the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, known as the Brundtland Report. From that time on development programmes and strategies have been taking into account basic ideas of sustainable development. Sweden from the very beginning (i.e. the 80s) has been involved in activities connected with sustainable development, first in its own area, and then in the developing countries. According to Swedish authorities and development organizations, economic development should not occur at the cost of the weakest social groups and the environment. The analysis of documents and the literature connected with development assistance from 1990-2008 proves that in formulating development programmes, as a kind of formal requirement, one has to take into account the influence of development activities on the environment and more widely understood sustainable development in its social and economic aspect.
