Biodiesel is seen as an eco-friendly substitute for diesel fuel because of its natural origin and environmental benefits. However, the assessment of the impact of the biodiesel production and the use of natural resources should be determined by the profit and loss balance which takes into account different stages of the production cycle. Based on the available literature the potential benefits and challenges for the sustainable production of biodiesel are presented. This paper compares the ecological effect of changing a type and quality of substrates as well as a method of the synthesis of bioesters on different impact categories on the environment. In terms of properties and the combustion characteristic biodiesel is an alternative for diesel fuel. The sustainable production of bioesters should be based on enzymatic processes and instead of refined vegetable oils waste oils and fats should be used, in the future also algae oil.(original abstract)
