Abstrakty
In the period 1990-2002, the Polish higher education sector underwent substantial change. First, the most radical change was the development of private (or non-public) sector, beginning in 1990 with the enactment of laws allowing private educational establishments (the Act on Higher Education, with later amendments; the Act on Higher Professional Education; the Act on Academic Titles and Degrees). The result of this expansion was the creation of Europe's most developed private higher education system. As of 2002, there were 252 private schools of higher education with more than half a million students enrolled, or over one-third of the total Polish student population. The majority of these schools tries to meet constantly growing educational needs, especially in smaller cities, where such schools sometimes offer the only available, as well as cheaper (compared to major academic centres) alternative, education.
