The generic objective of this study is the characterisation of the innovation process of the small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) with the greatest market success in Catalonia (Spain). The SMEs for the study were selected based on indicators of continued growth in sales figures and economic profitability. In our case, these companies were representative of the network of businesses of the region without having any affiliation with multinational groups or large-sized companies. We knew from the outset that if we selected only small and medium-sized companies, the results could be of relatively little significance in terms of R&D. However, given that the study was done at the request of the regional government, the supporting policies were considered to be of greater interest in the sector of SMEs and therefore the reflection on and the analysis of companies of this type might be able to provide data of interest for the redefinition of policies or the implementation of new plans of action. The study falls within an analytical framework in which the actions of the enterprise itself are given greater priority than the analysis of the economic context and the sector to explain how competitive advantages are obtained. In other words, it is hoped to carry out a study of some excellent companies in Catalonia with the objective of analysing how they innovate in order to learn the role of knowledge management, of R&D activities and of R&D outsourcing in innovation.
