Unfortunately, the mainstream approach to economic transition dominated the academic debate and the political agenda while leaving potentially fruitful approaches unexplored. The emphasis on the speed of transition stifled discussion of alternative economic systems, such as market socialism, and of different models of market capitalism. In particular, where they were not totally ignored, the differing initial conditions across countries were neglected. Defining an optimal sequence, rather than pace, of transformation would perhaps have been a more promising approach to reforms not only from a political viewpoint, but also in laying the ground for a better understanding of the way market economies work.
