The aim of the present study is to reveal the state of management in Bulgarian industrial companies in the period following their privatisation and its role in achieving growth and efficiency in company activity. Information on the state of companies and their management was gathered through the use of a descriptive research strategy and a particular approach termed "local observation". The study involved fifty industrial companies in a number of sectors. These included machine building and metalworking, shipbuilding and repair, power engineering, the chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and faience industries, and branches of light industry such as textiles, sewing, food processing and tobacco. The companies belong mainly to the first and second stages of the mass and cash privatisation. They were randomly selected, but the majority were middle-sized and large enterprises important to the national economy. (fragment of text)
