This paper will consider trade relations between Italy and a group of CEECs that include Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Albania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Yugoslavia and Slovenia. In the first three sections inter-industry trends in Italian exports and imports with the CEECs are examined using indices of revealed comparative advantages (RCAs) and relative export specialisation on the EU market. This analysis is mainly aimed at determining whether substantial changes in trade structure have taken place and what sectors and productive factors might be hit by competition from the CEECs. Section IV's econometric analysis uses RCAs for 1988-99 to assess what factor endowment is associated with the pre-transition and post-transition patterns of specialisation in the countries considered.
