Business Culture in Ghana : an Exploratory Study

This paper reports an exploratory study on the business culture in Ghana. It attempts to examine, describe and develop preliminary taxonomy of the business culture in Ghana. The tensions in the literature between organizational, national and business culture concepts are acknowledged. The paper, however, focuses on business culture as an amalgamation of practices and orientations of businesses, institutions and organizations in a country. No previous work exists on the business culture in Ghana. The findings suggested that there was a diversified business culture based on the size of an organization (SME, Large Corporate etc) and origin of firms (local or foreign). National culture per se did not emerge as a deciding variable. Instead, it is one of five causative variables which seem to underlie the practices and orientations which make up the business culture. Implications are discussed. (original abstract)
