Thirty years ago and more, manufacturing was essentially performed by stand-alone factories and organised in regional areas. In such organization of production transportation time delay and transportation costs of production flows between pairs of production activity cells did not influence much total costs of production. In that time MRP theory was born and developed by Orlicky. With the rapid globalisation, as a result of development of transportation, communication means and international commerce, including development of international trade legislation, the expansion process which took place across countries and continents led to the creation of global markets. The study of global manufacturing systems modelling started nearly simultaneously. Today, a majority of bigger companies are organised as global supply chains, embedded in the physical networks of different plants, logistic centres and storage facilities, where individual companies are outsourcing many activities which are not core business for them.
