Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi wstęp do rozważań nad zagadnieniem spójności społecznej. Jego celem jest bowiem zasygnalizowanie problematyki związanej z definiowaniem oraz próba przeglądu i usystematyzowania podejść do spójności społecznej w ramach ww. nurtów, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem postrzegania tego pojęcia w kontekście integracji europejskiej oraz przygotowywanej obecnie strategii Europa 2020. Ponadto dla przyjętego na szczeblu unijnym spojrzenia na spójność społeczną zaprezentowana zostanie metodologia jej pomiaru na podstawie europejskiego systemu wskaźników społecznych. Social cohesion has been introduced in many documents and academic studies as a construct referring to a large spectrum of ideas connected with reducing disparities and improving live conditions. Despite many attempts to define this concept reflecting its multidimensional character, it is still perceived as a quasi-concept, hybrid mental construction, concept of convenience used with regard to necessity and an umbrella term. As an attempt to organize the issue of social cohesion, two approaches can be distinguished: an academic approach in sociology and social psychology and a policy making approach. Social cohesion also constitutes one of the European Union's priorities and its significance results from the treaties and strategic documents - the Lisbon Strategy and strategy Europe 2020. The framework for social cohesion measurement has been laid by the European Council and determined as a set of statistical indicators. (original abstract)
