The article is dealing with the identification of problems which arise from the present situation of the Polish economy and require a long-term thinking. The existing situation exposes the economy to a danger of settling down on the position of a peripheral and backward country. The principal way of counteracting that danger is seen in an internationalization of the country's economy. However, this is only a necessary condition. What is needed is an active policy of the State toward building of a market economy without neglect of social goals. Various scenarios of the internationalization strategy are presented by the author. The most desired is considered the one aiming to re-orientate growth of the economy toward its restructuring. In the elaboration of a developmental strategy, evolutionary solutions rather than a radicalization of changes are recommended. Two main components of the strategy are subject to a closer examination: industrial policy and institutional reconstruction. The first one should emphazise sructural transformations. The crucial importance of the latter consists in the promotion of privatization of state enterprises and their transformation into the agents following rules of the market. (original abstract)
