The author discusses the results of the food sector of the Polish economy in 1992 against its development tendencies in the longer run. The particular subjects of examination are macroeconomic conditions of that sector, and especially supply and demand relations linking agriculture with the national economy, and problems of creation of markets. In that context the author discusses also the views of the proponents of the liberal and of the protectionist options, and evaluates the output and economic results of the food sector in 1989-1992. From that analysis he draws the conclusion that Poland has entered the phase of a relatively low, about 1 p.c., annual rate of growth of demand for food. The consequences of that development for the growth of agricultural output, intensity of the use of resources and farmers' incomes are discussed. The other subject of examination is the conjunctural condition of agricultural business, using the indices of gross agricultural output, price scissors and incomes parity. It is found that the narrowing of the market and the fall in demand have led to widening of price differentials between industrial and agricultural products and a relative and absolute fall in agricultural incomes Low incomes of farmers restrain their demand for industrial means of production which leads to the fall in industrial output and exacerbates the crisis in that sector, and this, in turn, reduces demand for agricultural products. As a result, the real farm income fell by 7,5 p.c. in 1992, in spite of the rise of the income parity in relation to the previous year.
