W połowie grudnia 2009 r. został zakończony ponad 18-letni spór handlowy między krajami Ameryki Łacińskiej - czołowymi światowymi eksporterami bananów i Unią Europejską - największym światowym importerem tych owoców. Przedmiotem sporu był unijny system importu bananów wspierający plantatorów z krajów Afryki, Karaibów i Pacyfiku (AKP), dawnych kolonii krajów europejskich. (fragment tekstu)
The longest lasting WTO trade dispute over bananas between the EU and some Latin American countries was finally settled in mid-December 2009. The dispute began in 1992 yet in the GATT when the EU introduced common rules for import of bananas that were recognised as discriminatory against bananas originating from other than ACP countries. Since 1995, the dispute moved to WTO structures. Consecutive panels and arbitrators found that the EU's banana import regime was inconsistent with the fundamental WTO principles, especially the MFN rule, the national treatment rule and the rule of non-discriminatory administration of quotas. According to the agreement reached, the EU will gradually cut its import tariffs on bananas from Latin America from the current rate of 176 euro to 114 euro per tonne in 2017. The deal is likely to increase competition in the banana European market and reduce prices for consumers in Europe. To ease restructuring process in the ACP banana exporting countries, the EU has declared to mobilise up to 200 million euro. (original abstract)
