(fragment tekstu)
The rate of per capita economic growth in 1950-1978 amounted to about 6 per cent annually. With the passage of time, it was showing a tendency to slow down. To prevent that development the policy of increasing investment outlays was practiced. Till the end of the sixties, this was realized by means of raising the rate of investment and the relative restrain of consumption and, in the seventies, with the assistance of foreign credits. Since the mid-sixties there was a rising tendency in the incremental capital-output ratio with the consequential increases in the necessary investments. After the cut of foreign credits, the economy broke down, and during the whole period of 1978-1989 it stagnated with the resulting fall in per capita product by more then 8 per cent in 1989 in relation to 1978. Prior to the World War II and immediately after its end, Poland's per capita national income was more or less equal to that of Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy. In 1989 these countries enjoyed considerably higher than Poland levels of income per capita. The economic results of People's Poland were thus unambiguously negative. (original abstract)
