The Automotive Industry of the New EU Member States - the End of Prosperity?

W ostatnich latach przemysł motoryzacyjny w krajach Europy Środkowej rozwijał się niezwykle dynamicznie, szczególnie po ich przystąpieniu do Unii Europejskiej. Wzrostowi produkcji towarzyszył szybki rozwój wymiany handlowej wyrobami przemysłu motoryzacyjnego, zarówno eksportu, jak i importu. Zdecydowana większość pojazdów mechanicznych wyprodukowanych w państwach UE-5 trafia na eksport, głównie do krajów starej Unii. W artykule przedstawiono rozwój przemysłu motoryzacyjnego w pięciu nowych państwach członkowskich, tj. Czechach, Polsce, Słowacji, Słowenii i na Węgrzech w latach 2000-2007 oraz jego perspektywy w obliczu kryzysu gospodarczego na świecie. (fragment tekstu)
The paper describes the changes that have occurred in the automotive industry since 2000 in selected new EU Member States (NMS), i.e. the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Special attention is paid to the impact of the current economic crisis on the development of this sector. In recent years, the motor industry in NMS has been developing very rapidly, especially after their accession to the EU. Vehicle production growth was accompanied by expansion of trade in automotive goods, as the vast majority of the production was exported, mainly to the EU-15. In spite of economic slowdown in the NMS, the risk of relocation of vehicle assembly plants from them to other countries (especially outside the EU) is rather small. This results from two reasons. First, although labour costs are relatively lower on the emerging markets outside the EU, there is a much higher economic and political risk to run business. Second, the NMS have the advantage of well-developed transport infrastructure and network of automotive components as well as of accessories suppliers. (original abstract)
