Development of the Estonian Banking System, 1994-1998

The financial sector, and particularly the banking system, could play very important role in the process of transition and economic recovery in the Central and Eastern European countries CEECs). Banks and other financial institutions are a unique set of business firms which assets ,nd liabilities, regulatory restrictions, economic functions and operating establish them as an important subject for the study, particularly in the conditions of emerging financial sectors in CEECs. Banks performance monitoring, analysis and control need special analysis of their operating and activities results from the viewpoint of different audiences, like investors/owners, regulators, customers/clients, and management themselves. Some historical notes on the development of Estonian banking system and the capital structure of banks are presented in this paper. Different versions of financial ratio analysis are used for bank performance analysis using financial statement items as initial data source. The usage of a novel matrix approach is discussed in the paper. Some results of Estonian commercial banking system performance analysis are also presented in the paper (1994-1998).
