Szacuje się, iż w 2025 r. 21% Europejczyków (i 18% Amerykanów) będzie miało powyżej 65 lat, a mediana wieku całej populacji wynosić będzie 44 (38 w USA). (fragment tekstu)

The article focuses on issues related to the labour force participation of elder people in the EU and argues that most Member States imperatively need to extend the working life of their citizens. Referring to such concepts as age management and work ability maintenance, the article takes as its premise that it is in the interest of both organisations and governments to encourage elder workers to continue their professional careers and to persuade retirees to return to work. This, however, requires a re-orientation of institutional arrangements - mainly, but not only, in the area of labour-market and early-retirement regulation - and organisational human resource practices with a view to responding to the needs and expectations of elder workers. What is needed, therefore, is the promotion of 'sustainable working lives' and, at the same time, the elimination of age discrimination. The article concludes by discussing barriers to the employment of elder workers in Poland, where, due to various structural weaknesses, this problem has taken on a particularly acute seriousness.
