Coal as an Energy Source in the EU

Abstrakty
(fragment tekstu)
Coal is widely perceived as the dirtiest fuel. Hence, due to the emission of carbon, coal-fired power plants are thought of as the least environmentally friendly. This is hardly surprising, given that the question of climate change has recently been given a top priority. With emphasis on the development of renewable energy sources, coal seems to be falling out of favour. Still, together with gas, it constitutes the main component of Europe's energy mix. That is why the sustainability of coal-fired electricity generation has become the subject of much debate. This paper, highlighting the attitude of the European Commission, argues that the future of coal does not necessarily have to be bleak. Specifically, it is pointed out that modern low-emission methods of burning coal as well as carbon sequestration and storage technologies suggest that coal burning could potentially be as clean as other renewables. Likewise, given the still-high cost of electricity generation from non-fossil fuels and the availability of coal, one might reasonably expect that coal will not lose its competitive advantage soon. We conclude by discussing a possible transformation of the energy sector's modus operandi. (original abstract)
