The question whether it is right to use the "cast" notion when defining the division into the whites and the blacks, in the South of the USA, has become the cause of a dispute in American sociology. The present paper is an attempt at presenting the theoretical controversies regarding the "cast" notion and a fashion of fairly wide-spread and free usage of that idea in common parlance.
