Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie działalności Warszawskiej Giełdy Towarowej oraz zbadanie, jaki wpływ na rynek zboża w Polsce miała powódź, która miała miejsce w 2010 r. Rynek zboża stanowi istotną część rynku produktów rolnych, ponieważ Polska jest trzecim producentem zbóż w UE, za Francją i Niemcami. W latach 2008-2010 wyprodukowała aż 9,5% wszystkich zbóż w UE. Z trzech podstawowych rodzajów zbóż: pszenicy, jęczmienia i kukurydzy, zbieranych w Europie, w Polsce uprawia się głównie pszenicę i jęczmień. (fragment tekstu)

The purpose of this paper is to present the Warsaw Commodities Exchange (e-WGT) and to check the impact of the flood in 2010 on the trade of grains at e-WGT. This flood was one of the largest which took place in Poland in recent decades. Based on the sale data at e-WGT from 1995 to 26 September 2011 we have shown the inefficiency of e-WGT. Over 90% of all transactions at e-WGT were initiated by government agencies: ARR and ARM. In addition, the turnover is not sustainable in time. For example, the average daily trading volume of agricultural products at CME Group is 1 milion USD, regardless of the quarter the results came from. The turnover at e-WGT is very variable. There were months with no transaction, the average daily turnover in the 3rd quarter of 2010 was more than 1 million PLN per day, while in the next quarter the average daily turnover fell by about 95% and was equal to 61 thousand PLN. Because of the inefficiency of e-WGT we cannot verify the impact of the flood in 2010 on the grain market in Poland. It has been also observed that the prices of wheat in Poland depend largely on changes in prices on CME and MATIF. This result confirms the strong effect of globalization we can see now in financial markets. (original abstract)
