The main ideas of social philosophy and policy exposed in Adam Smith's An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, are presented in the article. First, the position of that book within the scientific work of the Scotch philosopher and the main segments of his theory of economic liberalism are considered. Next, the premises of the social and political philosophy are discussed, in particular in relation to duties of state authorities, organization of higher education, teaching of philosophy, elementary and professional education, policy in matters of religion. It appears that Adam Smith, commonly treated merely as an economist, was a thinker of wide-ranging interest, who contributed much to the development of the modern liberal thought, not only in economics.
