The entry of foreign banks into the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) markets has been rapid and remarkable. This paper presents some empirical results of foreign banks' entry, activities and operation in a small open economy (Estonia), soon joining the European Union integrated financial market. The main incentives motivating foreign entry have been a decision to use the customer following and/or market seeking strategy. Some possible implications of foreign banks' entry are discussed in the paper. Empirical evidence indicates that in Estonia foreign banks have not created a significant additional competition because of a very small market and a small number of banks. (original abstract)
