The origin of sustainable development concept results from and is attributed to a rapid economic growth that - in turn - generates social and ecological problems affecting quality of life on the Earth. The proper definition of sustainable development has been long searched for along with attempts to define its goals and instruments of the development pursuit. In the Brundtland Report three major pillars of sustainable development are mentioned: protection of natural environment, economic growth and social development. The Report postulates have been reflected in all the resolutions approved by the UNO during the SO called major sessions. Concurrently with the attempt to redefine the sustainable development concept and expand its complexity, there is a debate going on concerning the concept implementation. Critics are highlighting too general measures taken to achieve sustainable development targets. They are also critical about unjustified attempts to carry out sustainable development by all means possible. (original abstract)
