W wielu regionach Europy śródlądowe drogi wodne pokrywają się z obszarami Natura 2000. Władze niektórych państw postrzegają ten fakt jako przeciwwskazanie do realizacji inwestycji na śródlądowych dróg wodnych. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wybranych inwestycji zrealizowanych na śródlądowych drogach wodnych Europy, które mogą być przykładem "dobrych praktyk", pokazujących jak pogodzić potrzeby tej gałęzi transportu z ograniczeniami przyrodniczymi. Inland waterways transport is one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport. Currently, its share of the freight transport in EU countries does not exceed 4%. This small share is cause by numerous bottlenecks on inland waterways. Waterways, which carry most freight transportation are: the Rhine, the Scheldt, the Meuse and the Seine. The inventory conducted international waterways in Europe showed that 17% are bottlenecks and waterways that do not meet the requirements of Class IV navigability. In order to increase the importance of inland waterway transport in the transport system it is necessary to invest in improving the waterways of international importance and the elimination of infrastructure barriers limiting the development of inland waterways. In many regions of Europe, inland waterways coincide with Natura 2000 sites. Authorities of some countries perceive this fact as a contraindication for the investments in inland waterways. The article is describes the examples of the investments made in the inland waterways of Europe that are "good practices", showing how to reconcile the needs of this mode of transport with natural retraints.
