Duzy negatywny wpływ spalania paliw w silnikach samochodowych na srodowisko naturalne człowieka oraz koniecznosc zapewnienia bez- pieczenstwa energetycznego panstw uzaleznionych od zewnetrznych dostaw ropy naftowej spowodowały w ostatnich latach wzrost zainte- resowania alternatywnymi paliwami do silników pojazdów samocho- dowych. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie jednej z moz- liwosci ograniczenia negatywnego wpływu spalin pojazdów samocho- dowych na srodowisko naturalne człowieka. Big negative infl uence of burning oil-based fuels in internal combusting en- gines on environment and necessity of external oil resources dependent coun- tries to gain energetic security have caused an increased interest in alternative fuels for motor vehicles. One of possibilities is application of compressed natural gas (CNG) in motor vehicles. There are three advantages of using CNG. This fuel is: • environment friendly • economical • safe Using CNG (methane) in motor vehicle engine diminishes the emission of harmful substances made by burning hydrocarbons. CNG engine cuts the emis- sion of: • CO by 25% • NMHC by 90% • PM by approx.100% • NOx by 90% Using CNG in motor vehicles also reduces noise level by 50%. CNG is one of the cheapest fuels on the fuel market. One cubic meter costs 2,1 zloty. In Poland liquid fuels are twice as expensive as CNG. Bigger price and higher cost of servicing CNG engine cars infl uence the economical aspect of driving them, comparing to traditional ones. We can assume, that in short term the higher costs (car and service) will be balanced by the big difference in prices of the two types of fuels. CNG as a fuel may rise concern for the safety. Despite common opinion physical properties of natural gas guarantee safe application in motor vehicles. Methane is lighter than air so in case of leakage it escapes immediately. Ameri- can statistics tell us that CNG-fuelled engines are safer than traditional ones dur- ing road accidents when leakage or explosion of fuel may occur. Liquid fuels ig- nite very easily when spilt whereas natural gas disperses quickly when released causing very little danger. Due to very durable construction of CNG tanks there is very little probability of breaking them during a collision. In case of braking the tank natural gas decompresses violently lowering quickly its temperature much below its fl ash point, that is 630 oC. Advantages of CNG stimulate transport companies to take interest in it. There are fi rst companies using CNG powered vehicles in their logistics. "Jagr" a company located in Gdynia uses a fl eet of Daily Iveco lorries to transport their dairy products from their Gdynia warehouse to shops around the Tricity. Lim- ited area and nearness of a CNG fuel station allows Jagr to use CNG vehicles in their product delivery chain. Another example of using CNG for logistic purpose is the Polish Post in Wroclaw where their Daily Iveco CNG powered lorries carry parcels to address- ees within the city. High prices of other fossil fuels and apparent advantages of CNG will cause a growing interest in this fuel in our country.(original abstract)
