My paper has in many ways a distinct autobiographical quality, since it draws on four personal experiences of mine over the last fifteen years. The first three I shall mention have enabled me to identify a potential point of contact between Italy, Poland and the rest of Europe in the field of European Social Identity, mainly in the field of social policies, democracy and social service or social work. The fourth experience concerns a not quite so simple comparison between this common viewpoint and the complex cultural, institutional, social and political situation of the United States.
