The idea of sustainable transport has become an important part of European Union policy. Strong emphasis is placed on the development of the environmentally friendly modes of transport. Therefore, short sea shipping was the focus of policy makers in the context of the European solving transport problems, especially with regard to the implementation of sustainable development. The development of short sea shipping provides an alternative to road transport in many European relations, thus reducing congestion and contributing to enhanced safety. However, the shipping charge related to a drastic reduction of emissions of sulfur oxides can affect its competitiveness against other modes of transport, and thus the implementation of sustainable transport objectives (original abstract)
