Abstrakty

W niniejszym eseju rozważana będzie kwestia, czy i w jakim sensie racjonalność i prawda mogą być przypisywane dawnym poglądom. Oceny dawnych prawd zasadzają się na przypisywaniu przez nas samych prawdziwości minionym• twierdzeniom, zaś oceny racjonalności na śledzeniu wszelkich rozbieżności pomiędzy wnioskami uzyskanymi niegdyś a tymi, które my uważalibyśmy za uzasadnione przy takich samych przesłankach. W celu uzasadnienia naszych tez przedyskutujemy filozoficzne motywacje takich ocen (przy czym z niektórych argumentów wynikać będzie, że przeprowadzenie takich ocen jest niemożliwe bądź niecelowe) oraz role pełnione przez oceny w historiografii myśli. This paper considers whether and in what sense rationality and truth may be attributed to obsolete beliefs, especially where those beliefs are separated from-their modern counterparts by putative intellectual discontinuities. Several historiographical objections to the possibility and desirability of such attributions are discussed; an argument is offered in response establishing a foundation for the appraisal of past truth and rationality in the face of Kuhnian revolutions. Lastly a demonstration is advanced of the value of such assessments to the historiography of ideas and to philosophical in-vestigations of scientific methodology and progress. (original abstract)
