The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodology of the production and distribution optimization in a production company. Moreover, this paper presents application possibilities of the MS Excel Solver add-in. On the basis of the decision problem, concerning formulation of the plan of action in a production company, a mathematical model was built. The creation of the model enabled the evaluation of the problem and the development of an algorithm leading to a solution: First of all, the sales figures for three stores were forecast (the order amount had not been contracted before). The forecast was estimated on the basis of historic data concerning the order amounts in those stores. Secondly, it was determined how to produce a set amount of goods at the minimal cost. Last but not least, the transport plan was optimized. A lot of factors were taken into consideration: orders for shops, capacity of warehouses and transport costs (from a factory to warehouses and then to shops). Thanks to the Solver add-in it was possible to optimize the procedure of the production and distribution planning. (original abstract)
