Do najistotniejszych uwarunkowań zaliczono: zmiany demograficzne, zmiany dochodów gospodarstw domowych, zmiany w systemie ubezpieczeń społecznych.

This article reduces the scarcity of Polish literature resources referring to the household saving behavior in the world by the diagnosis of the main trends in household saving in Japan. It reveals that household saving rate in Japan used to be high in both absolute and relative terms but since 1990s it has declined sharply. In order to explain this phenomenon the determinants of household saving in Japan were examined. It is shown that demographic factors, income factors and social security system factors provide a major contribution to saving rate changes. It is recognized that Japan's household saving rate will continue its decline mainly due to the rapid aging of her population. (original abstract)
