The past quarter-century in Europe is linked to the process of development and strengthening of the European Union. A particular role in this process was played by the period of 2000-2007 when a 10-year developmental strategy, the so-called Lisbon Strategy, was defined and its implementation was initiated thereof. In the middle of that period, the EU15 was enlarged by 10 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Owing to that, the social and economic potential of the European Union of that time was strengthened. The Lisbon Strategy created opportunities for use of that potential for the purpose of development in the regional and European scale. (fragment of text)
