Abstrakty
Istotą działania banków komercyjnych jest między innymi transformacja ryzyka. Banki są w swej działalności narażone na różne rodzaje ryzyka, a od jego rozmiarów uzależniony jest m. in. poziom uzyskiwanych dochodów. Ryzyko to jest ograniczane do dopuszczalnych rozmiarów za pomocą norm prawnych oraz przedsięwzięć podejmowanych przez same banki. Często zapominamy natomiast o tym, że na ryzyko w operacjach z bankami narażeni są także ich klienci, którzy na wypadek upadłości banku mogą nie odzyskać ulokowanych kapitałów. (fragment tekstu)
The activities of banks are exposed to all manner of risk, which can be reduced to admissible size by means of legal norms and measures undertaken by the banks themselves. Exposure to risk in operations with banks is also faced by their customers, who may lose their deposited resources in the event of a bank's failure They have very limited possibilities of influencing the safety of operations conducted by banks. One of the institutions that improve the safety of functioning of banks is the Bank Guarantee Fund, whose task is to guarantee deposits accumulated in banks and to grant them repayable financial assistance if they are threatened by insolvency. The paper contains an analysis of the two areas of activities of the Bank Guarantee Fund conducted since its inception. The analysis performed shows that until 1996 the Fund's most important task was to efficiently disburse guaranteed resources to the customers of bankrupt banks, while from 1997 on, assistance operations gained prominence. Due to this aid, over the whole period investigated, numerous bank failures were prevented and ca. 1900 bank outlets with over 62 thousand jobs were retained, which is not insignificant with heavy unemployment existing in Poland.
