Does European Integration Change New Members' Trade?

Warianty tytułu
Języki publikacji
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how European integration affects trade between new EU members and the EU countries. In particular, we ask the question whether European integration contributes to specialisation, and whether it stimulates convergence in the structure of foreign trade. This is important, since depending on the initial assumptions, integration theory would expect either convergence or divergence of the trade structure. The first section presents theories on how integration affects trade structure. The next section substantiates theoretical hypotheses based on an analysis of countries which joined the EU in the 1980s and 1990s. The paper ends with a summary and conclusions. (fragment of text)
