Teaching Sustainable Development in New Business Schools

Abstrakty
Panująca w krajach postsocjalistycznych mentalność ekonomiczna nie sprzyja działaniom na rzecz trwałego rozwoju14. Działalność w tym zakresie łączona jest z kosztami lub, w najlepszym przypadku, z działalnością z dziedziny public relations. Konkurencyjność zyskuje się poprzez obniżki plac, downsizing ubezpieczeń, przywilejów pracowniczych, opieki socjalnej, a nie poprzez stosowanie innowacji technologicznych (procesowych i produktowych) czy organizacyjnych uzyskiwanych na przykład za pomocą systemów zarządzania środowiskiem i trwałym rozwojem (environmental and sustainability management). "Zazielenienie" gospodarki jest jednym z podstawowych warunków osiągnięcia trwałego rozwoju. Stwierdzenie to dotyczy szczególnie krajów biedniejszych, w których niedostatki materialne ludności oraz bezrobocie są podstawowymi problemami społecznymi. Jednym z warunków powstania zielonej gospodarki jest edukacja na uczelniach wyższych.(fragment tekstu)
In European:"countries in transition the introduction and development of market mechanisms resulted in commercialization of education and consequently, its privatization and deregulation. Many university-level business schools were established (ca. 300 in Poland). Many departments of State universities introduced commercial part-time studies (e.g. in law, economics, management). This new structure of education is, at least theoretically, market oriented. The question is how the market-oriented (or driven) model of education responds to the concept of sustainable development and its teaching. There are two main questions. On the supply side it should be asked if the available curricula take into account the sustainability issue (under various labels, often connected with ecology or environmental protection). On the demand side a question arises whether students request such knowledge. Additionally, one can ask whether State strategies and policies, legal regulations, media coverage and conduct of companies have a significant impact on both sides. What is the role of international debates and pressures (of UN activities, world summits, alter- globalist movement, etc.) on them? Analysis and evaluation will be prepared on the basis of subject literature, documents, interviews and questionnaires distributed among faculty and students. The picture obtained will be complemented by some recommendations for State policies, business school programs and policies, and for students who should be better informed and inspired in their careers and lives by the idea of sustainability in a broader sense. Needless to add, students of business schools (ca. 500 000 in Poland) and alumnae play and will continue to play a very important role in economic and social life by making choices and decisions, evaluating risks and taking on responsibilities (original abstract)
