Abstrakty

Nicholas John Spykman uchodzi za jednego z najważniejszych przedstawicieli amerykańskiej myśli geopolitycznej; znany jest przede wszystkim jako polemista Halforda J. Mackindera. Jednak w jego dorobku znalazły się także publikacje z zakresu teorii i metodologii stosunków międzynarodowych oraz socjologii, które zasługują na uwagę. Dlatego warto potraktować bardziej kompleksowo zarówno jego wkład w naukę, jak i rolę intelektualisty, kształtującego amerykańską politykę zagraniczną. Nicholas Spykman urodził się 13 października 1893 r. w Holandii. W młodości studiował na Uniwersytecie w Delft. Wcześnie zainteresował się sprawami międzynarodowymi, czego wyrazem była praca w Holenderskiej Agencji Dyplomatycznej w Kairze i Indiach Wschodnich. W 1920 r. wyemigrował z Batawii (dzisiejszej Dżakarty) do Stanów Zjednoczonych, motywując to chęcią rozwoju intelektualnego. Studiował na Uniwersytecie Kalifornijskim; już w 1923 r. uzyskał tytuł doktora nauk humanistycznych1. Następnie, w 1925 r., podjął pracę na Uniwersytecie Yale, gdzie w 1928 r. nadano mu tytuł profesora2. W 1935 r. współtworzył Instytut Studiów Międzynarodowych i początkowo pełnił funkcję jego dyrektora. Objął również stanowisko szefa Departamentu Stosunków Międzynarodowych. Choć zmarł przedwcześnie 26 czerwca 1943 r. w wieku 49 lat, zdążył opublikować cztery książki3 oraz kilka wartościowych artykułów naukowych. (fragment tekstu)
