Given the economic importance of SME's for the EU and the changing economic development of the economy and the strong competitive pressure on these is the stabilization and consolidation of small and medium sized companies and securing jobs a recurring task for an external business advice, provided to the companies lack own resources and management competencies and the person requesting this company. Here the dilemma is that usually most of the SME's specialized consultants are sought and their use is encouraged by the EU. In this one-sided focus on specialist practice without sufficient consideration of the holistic thinking reveals "the power of the incumbents" (Hans Ulrich) Case studies point to the weakness and limitations of this approach and the need for holistic thinking.
