Globalization is not entirely new. The basic framework for globalization has been in place since the nineteenth century when the competitive system of national states fostered the emergence of international agencies and institutions, global networks of communication, a standardised system of global time, international competition and prizes, international law, and internationally shared notions of citizenship and human rights. The concept of globalization has two inflections: it suggests that political, economic and social activity is becoming world-wide in scope: and it connotes an intensification of levels of interaction and interconnectedness among the states and societies which make up international society. Globalization can be defined as the intensification of world-wide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa. Globalization exploits local differentiation. Thus, instead of thinking of the global replacing the local, it would be more accurate to think of a new articulation between 'the global' and 'the local'. The globalization of economic life can be readily seen, first of all, in an internationalisation of investment. Also a global financial system has risen, making the financial markets of different countries highly independent. Labour markets similarly have undergone a massive internationalisation and degradation. While cross-national labour flows have been common throughout the twentieth century, immigration into the more economically advanced countries has dramatically accelerated in recent decades. The production and flow of goods are no longer predominantly national but rather international in scope and character. Now single commodities have multiple national origins, and goods within a single market are manufacturai in a plurality of locations. (original abstract)
