Consumer's rent and economically optimal level of pollution flow

The difference between the usefulness of a particular good for its purchaser (expressed by the purchaser's willingness to pay for it) and the market price of that good is called the consumer's rent. The consumer while purchasing a particular good is getting the so-called rent i.e. the benefit resulting from external conditions. The purchased good has to have for such consumer the value at least equal to the price he pays for it, otherwise there would be no point in buying it. If the value of that particular good for its purchaser equals the price he pays for that good, the consumer's rent is zero. However, for most purchasers the value of the good is higher than its price and they do get a rent. In Fig. 1 below the total of rents of all the consumers of the good is the area below the curve (in simplification: the straight line) of demand and above the straight line of the price of the balance.(fragment of text)
