This article discusses the characteristics of family businesses and presents an evaluation of their potential with regards to being incubators of so-called 'dynamic organizations' (Galbraith et al. 2001). Article concludes that the main problems in transforming a family business into a dynamic organization could be associated with a change of organizational philosophy at the time of taking control over a company by the second generation of owners as well as with a problem of inequality of participants of the organization (non-family members) as far as access to information and decision making re concerned. However, family businesses, in view of their strong value system and stability of the ownership structure, may be a good starting point for the development of a dynamic organization.
