The interest in the multifunctionality of farming springs from the universal recognition and appreciation of the role of agriculture in maintaining the natural environment in good condition and preserving the cultural heritage. In other words, this model emphasises those fields and results of the farmer's activity that are not directly verified and paid for by the market. The chief idea of multifunctionality is that while there are many agricultural functions expressed in terms of goods, services and markets, agriculture also produces non-market goods, e.g. in helping to preserve the landscape or biodiversity. The existence of both these types of goods is closely related. The connection between the beneficial external effects of farming and its production of market goods is known as jointness. On most agricultural holdings engaged in multifunctional farming, it is impossible to separate the market and non-market spheres of production. The scenario of support for multifunctional farming in Poland was outlined in the Rural Development Programme 2004-2006, which embraced measures falling under the second pillar of the Common Agricultural Policy. The instruments employed to implement the goals of multifunctional farming and sustainable development of rural areas were three measures: Support for agricultural activity in less-favoured areas (LFA), Support for agrienvironmental ventures and improvement of animal welfare, and Afforestation of farmland. As the results of support for measures involving productive and natural (green) functions show, the level of multifunctionality on agricultural holdings varies regionally. The application of this model can be found to be more advanced in the voivodeships of Podlasie, Warmia-Mazuria and Lubuska Land, and less so in the south of the country: Lower Silesia, Opole, Silesia, Małopolska and Subcarpathia. In those areas further development of multifunctional farming requires an improvement in the farm-size structure and a stabilisation of the ownership system. The multifunctional farming model is gaining an ever firmer foothold in the rural areas of Poland.(original abstract)
