The European transport policy aims at increasing the market share of more environmentally friendly transport modes, rail and water, integrated into intermodal transport alternatives with priorities to technical harmonisation and interoperability between modes concerned. Intermodal terminals are a focal point where different actors of intermodal transport processes meet and efficient processes in terminals are key for a success of intermodal transport system development. Therefore it is important to implement of innovative solutions at intermodal terminals, including transhipment technologies and information systems (mainly tracking and tracking systems), to be open for all intermodal customers. The author presents selected best practices of innovative solutions in both two fields they are used in European intermodal transport markets.(original abstract)
