The paper discusses the trends and issues of rural development in Ukraine. It is concluded that the main reason of the current deplorable situation in rural Ukraine is that the existing approach, related to the development of rural areas is not sufficiently focused and targeted to deal with the problems of the population there. That is why it is necessary to work out the well-defined rural development strategies, which would allow the country to ensure the development of rural territories, to increase the competitiveness and the viability of the rural economy, and to improve the quality of rural life.
