Generation of productive employment has become the central task of economic planning in India. Sericulture in some areas of rural India is a productive occupation for small and marginal farmers. It plays a vital role in the economy of Malda district, accounting for 60% of national share and for 75% of state share of raw silk production. The present study furnishes a detailed account on the problems of mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing. Attempt has been made to formulate constructive guidelines for the eradication of inherent problems of the said sector so that it attains viable development at a sectoral, as well as spatial level.(original abstract)
