The present paper is a case comment of the decision issued by the European Commission in the case AT.39792 - Steel Abrasives on 2 April 2014. The decision establishes that Ervin, Winoa, MTS and Würth engaged in an anti-competitive practice having as its object the restriction of price competition in the steel abrasives market. The cartel at hand covered the entire territory of the European Economic Area and lasted from 2003 to 2010. By imposing fines of € 30.7 million in total the present decision is a reminder that changes in input costs are never an excuse for replacing competition among rivals by collusion. This paper focusses on the nature of the anti-competitive practice concerned and the calculation of the fines imposed by the European Commission. (original abstract)
