Abstrakty

The functioning of the contemporary monetary systems, with central bank as the dominant agent, which issues legal tender, is widely criticized. Thus, there are many attempts in the literature to formulate alternative conceptions of monetary systems. Such conceptions are often radical and differ sharply from existing frameworks. One of the most popular among them is the so called denationalization of money, put forward by F. Hayek. The aim of the paper is to characterise premises and the main features of Hayek's theory, along with controversies about denationalization of money. The main conclusion is that despite of inevitable (mainly political) problems with its practical use, the theory constitutes an interesting and consistent model of the monetary system.
